Saintly

Print of Saintly before 1996 Warwick Stakes

Saintly was a member of the same foal crop as Octagonal, Filante and Nothin Leica Dane.  He first came under notice with a win in the Carbine Club Stakes over the 1995 Melbourne Cup carnival.  The following Autumn he showed a devastating sprint to defeat the older horses in the Expressway Stakes and then went to Melbourne to win the Group 1 Australian Cup.  He was narrowly defeated by Octagonal in the AJC Derby, Rosehill Guineas and Mercedes Classic.  As a 4yo he was a first up second to Filante in the Warwick Stakes before winning the Hill Stakes then heading to Melbourne to become the first horse since Rising Fast (1954) to win the WS Cox Plate - Melbourne Cup double.  Sent to Japan for the Japan Cup he became seriously sick a day before the race.  Saintly recovered to return with an amazing win in the CF Orr Stakes finishing hard to storm home to an easy victory.  Sadly he suffered a bowed tendon soon after and was eventually retired.  Saintly was named Australian Horse of the Year in 1996-97.

Sunline

Print of Sunline winning 2000 WS Cox Plate

The winner of 13 Group 1s Sunline won her first Group 1 in the Flight Stakes as a Spring 3yo.  In the autumn of 1999 she campaigned successfully in Melbourne before returning to Sydney to take out the Group 1 AJC Doncaster Hcp.  Returning in the spring she won the GR 2 Warwick Stakes then to complete her campaign she easily won the 1999 WS Cox Plate.  As an autumn 4yo she won 4 of her 5 starts including the Group 1 Coolmore Classic and Group 1 All Aged Stakes but her sole defeat running a gallant second to Over in the AJC Doncaster while conceeding 6kg won over many fans.  In the Spring of 2000 Sunline was nearly unbeatable she won the Gr 1 Manikato Stakes, Gr 2 Memsie Stakes, Gr 2 JF Feehan Stakes, then was second by a nose to Fairway in the Turnbull Stakes before outclassing the field running away with the WS Cox Plate.  Sunline then went to Hong Kong where she held out local champion Fairy King Prawn to win the Hong Kong Mile.  In 2001 She won the first of two  Gr 1 Waikato Sprints in New Zealand, Gr 2 memsie Stakes, Gr 2 Turnbull Stakes and Gr2 Apollo Stakes and was an unlucky second in the WS Cox Plate.  At the Sydney Autumn carnival in 2002 she won the Gr 1 Coolmore Classic, Gr 2 Apollo Stakes before defying the opposition to win a second AJC Doncaster Hcp carrying 58kg the highest weight for a mare since the 1930s.  A week later she won the Gr 1 AJC All Aged Stakes.  In the spring she won the Mudgway Stakes before taking part in a two horse war in the Caulfield Stakes with Lonhro.  She was retired to stud after running 4th in the WS Cox Plate.  Sunline was named Australian Horse of the Year three successive seasons in 1999/00, 2000/01 and 2001/02.

Super Impose

Print of Super Impose exhibition gallop at Moonee Valley after leading out the Cox Plate field

Super Impose won the 1988 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and the AJC Summer Cup which proved preludes to forthcoming seasons.  In 1989 he won the Turnbull Stakes before going on to run second in the Melbourne Cup.  He was tried as a miler the following year which proved to be his forte.  Racing in one of Australia's classiest eras he stormed home with topweight to win the AJC Doncaster Hcp before heading to the spring where he won the AJC Warwick Stakes before taking out the AJC Epsom Hcp.  At that stage he was considered the best horse racing in Australia but bled in the Caulfield Stakes where he was placed and missed the big spring races.  In 1991 he returned to win the Gr 1 Chipping Norton Stakes, Gr 1 Ranvet Stakes and recorded yet another astounding win in the AJC Doncaster storming home down the outside.  In the spring he won another AJC Warwick Stakes then the STC Hill Stakes before recording his memorable recordbreaking win in the AJC Epsom Hcp carrying 61kg after weaving through the field close to the rails.  He went to Melbourne and was a close second in the WS Cox Plate.  In 1992 he won a second AJC Chipping Norton Stakes then carried a crushing weight in the AJC Doncaster and ran on to be just behind the pacegetters.  In the spring Super Impose repeated his Doncaster run in the Epsom before cantering home in the Canberra Cup then went to Melbourne and defeated one of the best fields ever assembled in the 1992 WS Cox Plate.  A run on a bog track in the Melbourne Cup followed and Super Impose was retired.  He died in 2007 after having a second career beig a 'nanny' on a stud farm and making various guest appearances at big race meetings.
